Building Connection Through Community

Building a Sense of Belonging

As Resident Experience Director at Arrow Senior Living, I’ve seen firsthand how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and even the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just a nice-to-have, it is essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group event, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed gathering, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel like they truly belong.

From my perspective, every interaction is a chance to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and experience the emotional and social benefits that come with genuine human connection.

To me, community at Vitalia Mentor means creating a place where residents feel seen, valued, and understood. It is more than sharing a building, it is belonging. Community is the laughter shared during meals, the friendships formed at events, and the support neighbors offer one another. It also stretches beyond our walls into Mentor itself through handwritten letters to first responders, school supply drives for Mentor Ridge Elementary, and other Acts of Service that allow residents to give back.

Building connections is essential because relationships lie at the heart of a fulfilling life. When residents form friendships, they become happier, more engaged, and more resilient. These relationships also empower residents to take part in purposeful projects that strengthen bonds and create a positive impact in the wider community.

I encourage engagement by creating opportunities that feel natural, inclusive, and fun. Many residents enjoy creative activities, so we host group projects like handmade cards, seasonal crafts, and collaborative service initiatives. I also introduce residents who share interests and involve them in planning events. Smaller gatherings paired with creative outlets often lead to the strongest connections.

Connecting With Mentor and Welcoming New Residents

At Vitalia Mentor, we help residents experience the town around them. Outings to local restaurants, visits from entertainers, partnerships with the senior center, and service projects keep residents active and connected to the world outside our doors.

One of my favorite events is our resident Happy Hour, especially when paired with signature cocktails and mocktails. Whether residents are enjoying a drink or sharing laughter, these gatherings create natural moments of connection. It’s inspiring to watch new friendships form in such a relaxed environment.

When new residents move in, we make sure they feel included from the start. Our Resident Ambassadors offer warm welcomes, provide tours, and invite them to sit together in the dining room or join upcoming events. They also encourage new neighbors to participate in creative projects or service initiatives, giving them hands-on ways to meet people and feel involved. With personal support and meaningful opportunities to connect, new residents feel part of the Vitalia Mentor family from day one.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful interaction enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Experience Director at Arrow Senior Living, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to foster these connections can transform daily life, turning our building into a true home and creating moments residents and their families will treasure.

By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and a sense of belonging, we’re not just planning events. We’re building a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, it’s the connections we nurture that make all the difference.
