Culinary Tips and Tricks

Category: Health & Wellness

Author: Eric Pixley, Culinary Director

As Culinary Director at Vitalia Mentor, I have a wealth of experience in creating meals that are not only nutritious but also delicious and satisfying. Over the years, I’ve picked up countless tricks that make cooking easier, more flavorful, and even a little more fun. I want to share my best-kept secrets—unexpected ingredient pairings, must-have pantry staples, underrated kitchen tools, and game-changing techniques that can transform the way you cook. Whether you’re a beginner looking to sharpen your skills or a seasoned cook hoping to elevate your dishes, these expert insights will inspire you to get creative in the kitchen.

Smart Tools and Pantry Essentials

Every cook should keep a butter knife in their kitchen toolkit. When I didn’t have the “right” tool—like for frosting a cake—my butter knife always saved the day.

To whip up quick and tasty meals, I always stock tomato paste, allspice seasoning, dried fruit, and pasta. These staples add richness and flexibility to a variety of recipes.

If you’re just starting out in the kitchen, focus on two things: how to properly hold a knife and how to use the right spatula for each cooking task. Early in my career, while working at a pizzeria, I learned how to infuse roasted garlic and fresh veggies directly into deep dish dough. It only needed a touch of cheese and sauce—but it delivered incredible flavor.

Flavor Pairings and Finishing Touches

For a bold and surprising twist, I love combining strawberry jam with chili powder. This combo creates a sweet and spicy base for a standout rib sauce.

When cooking pasta, my go-to rule is to keep it al dente. I rely on touch and visual cues to get the texture just right.

To bring restaurant-level flavor into home cooking, timing is everything. Use quality ingredients—but more importantly, know when to add them. That attention to detail can make all the difference.

Mastering these culinary tips and tricks will elevate your home cooking. Simple techniques can turn everyday meals into something truly special. By applying the strategies I’ve learned throughout my career, you’ll cook with more confidence, creativity, and flavor in every bite.
