Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.
As Culinary Director at Vitalia Mentor, I found my way into senior living by accident. When I moved back to Ohio, the opportunity came along. I have been doing this work ever since.
This work became meaningful because it is about more than food. It is about serving residents well each day. It also means supporting families who trust the team to care for their loved ones.
Residents have taught me to stay humble. They have also taught me to treat everyone with respect. Those lessons matter in the kitchen, the dining room, and every interaction.
One favorite tradition is Sunday Brunch. Brunch gives the culinary team more freedom to offer residents a wider selection. It also creates a dining experience that feels special, relaxed, and enjoyable.

Success in senior living culinary takes knowledge and experience. It also takes strong leadership and teamwork. A successful leader needs to guide the team while staying willing to help wherever needed.
Leading from the front matters. It shows the team that you understand every position. It also shows that you can jump in at any time to support them.
The impact of this work often shows up through family feedback. Families share that the Culinary Team is making their loved ones happy. That kind of response means a great deal.
Those comments are a reminder that the impact of a good meal in senior living reaches beyond the dining room. It can bring comfort to a resident. It can also bring peace of mind to a family member who wants their loved one to feel cared for.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
